In my experience, the beater shaft on this pedal is a standard size I have used it on the Pearl Demon Drive, Yamaha direct drive pedals, as well as the JoJo Mayer pedals. Therefore, it has a lot of versatility.

After using my other beater (same model), I realized that the felt layer is just a thin layer of felt before it turns into plastic. It will be a while before this one wears out and I have to buy another one since I'm not a very hard hitter. In the event that this one wears out, I will switch to one of the other Pearl beaters. It should have a thicker felt beater layer than a thin one. As far as the plastic side goes, it's not for me. It sounds bad. For me, it's too expensive and it merely kills the umph of my drum kit.
Compared to the previous device, this one works better and offers two impact choices. I like the felt side as well or even better than traditional round felt beaters. On the other hand, the hard plastic side sounds and feels much punchier and louder. According to my observations, this drum is more responsive when bouncing off the bass drum a couple of 16th notes. You can also quickly adjust the bass sound for the style of music you are playing at the time with this option. While it is an expensive upgrade, it is extremely useful. It just needs to be done.
I've tried several others in the past, but always return to it. I have tried a lot of beaters, but this one is the only one I keep coming back to. When I snapped the beater that came with my Pearl pedal (identical to this one) because of overuse and poor technique, I replaced it with a DW beater (what Ye Olde Local Drum Shoppe had in stock). This little thing is fantastic. I had to order this because the massive thing was too heavy, so I ordered this and now everything is right in the world. I would describe these beaters as light, but very sturdy. My pedals have performed like a charm since the minute I put them on.
I find these beaters to be excellent value for money and I am satisfied with the product in general. My style ranges from hard metal to funk to jazz and these beaters have met all of my needs.
