Basically, a test cup is a tall narrow metal tube containing syrup that you can drop the hydrometer into and it will float at the correct viscosity when it has been filled. There might be something else you can use, but it needs to be narrow and able to withstand Here is my attempt to help.
It is not necessary to use a hydrometer to make syrup however, it helps determine when it has finished Alternatively, you can use a candy thermometer, but its scale is much larger, so it's not as accurate as a digital thermometer. You will want to cook it until it is 7 degrees above the boiling point of water in your area if you are using temperature instead of a hydrometer. When I used to use a candy thermometer, I eventually switched to a hydrometer because I found it to be I have consistently used the same one since years ago The only thing you have to do is handle it carefully since it's glass. The ideal level of sugar in syrup is 66 degrees Brix, which is 66%.

I've been making it for a few years now, but I only make a small batch for Christmas to share with family and friends. A good friend is anyone who supports you Hickory syrup is something I have been making for years and I simply used to can it in a hot water bath to preserve it. Instead of the usual 6 ounces, I decided to go with 12 ounces this year. In my initial research, I found typical syrup bottles with lined caps, but after a previous purchase, I decided to buy the Hydrometer and the cup that goes Although they are expensive instruments, I wanted to see how close my idea of perfect syrup was to what the Hydrometer revealed in the finished product. This turned out to be a great solution. During the hot test, I was pretty much on the money with my estimation of consistency In my case, the syrup is just a bit heavier. If you intend to sell to the public, however, you have to abide by the law and be within the specifications for what is legally categorized as syrup. More people are trying my syrup now and getting addicted to it, so I get an increasing number of requests for it now. Even though I do like Maple for certain products, I will toil to make Hickory syrup and no one will ever learn the recipe - it's my favorite - and no one else will be able to make it either - I love it. My life will be shortened by this sucker. If you use this for your home made process, just ensure that you only test the syrup once it has reached It is important to keep the thermometer and hydrometer with the steel cup very warm so that the shock of immersion into hot syrup does not crack the glass. Be gentle and handle with care. In my case, I put my glass bottles in the oven at 220 degrees and pull them out one at a time to fill (caps are washed and stored until needed).
The hydrometer is poorly constructed, as is suggested by other reviews. The seams on my instrument weren't properly sealed, which let in sap each time I used it. However, it did not crack or shatter as other reviewers claimed, but it is clearly made of poor quality materials and has not been QC tested.
Before you make a purchase, be sure to check out the photos below. Considering the price and Prime, this item is tempting, but there are better tools for your hobby out there if you look. Only a few measurements could be taken before it was rendered useless. If you temper it before adding it to hot syrup, it may still burn. I have experience with the instrument, so this is my personal evaluation. The information is provided in the hope that it will be.
