You can purchase retail maple syrup to use as a sample (and test it at the same temperature as the production) without generating any significant variation in taste. The test jar is a little flimsy, but the hydrometer is very good! It responded well at the temperature stated on the instructions with water. The plastic tube seems a little cheaply made but it doesn't leak. I would recommend it to those with a need for a calibrated thermometer. I've seen an issue where people complain that the tube breaks when they try to take it apart. When it comes to the thread, though, there is absolutely none to be found. The reason I purchased this hydrometer is 1 the fluid reservoir is plastic, 2 the volume calibration is etched on the tube, and 3 the float has color-coded stems. Initially I thought the base of the reservoir would be easy to clean so I thought it would be easy to clean. However, when the reservoir is filled with fluid it leaks like a sieve, regardless of how carefully I clean it The seat will not seat properly or I can't get a secure fit, so I need a bowl or a pan to prevent a mess, which is very awkward. I would not recommend it.
I'm going to give this a 2 out of 5 star rating. The product I ordered arrived broken, which was not satisfactory to me. All of the protective packaging suggests that it may have been thrown around quite a bit. It was definitely disappointing. I wanted to test some wine that I am making with this. As I try to get it done before Christmas, I'm gonna have to do this sooner rather than later. Once I get my new hydrometer I'll change the rating.
It has only been used twice so far, but so far, it has worked Once the bottom of the jar is unscrewed, the test jar consists of two parts, which makes it much easier to store. The only way to know if it will leak in the future is to wait and see how it does. A hydrometer reads perfectly in distilled water and is easy to use. In my opinion, this product is worth buying.
In case I need to restore it, I bought this one. As a precaution, I play with two spares just in case one of them breaks. In no time at all, I had moved this to my main system.
There was a crack in the plastic jar. It could have been that the jar's contents were too cold, but prior to noticing the crack in the lid I don't remember seeing anything odd occur. While the jar is broken, the tool itself seems to be fine, so if you're not too concerned with the jar, you can take a look at it. The glass graduated cylinder was picked up, so we'll see how that works.
A defective top arrived, so it wasn't worth going through the whole process of returning or being refunded. It looked a little cheesy to have a plastic beaker with the hydrometer floating in it. Additionally, it appears I received an item that differs from the one advertised, as the item I received has green on the bottom and the trim on the beaker is white instead of This product is not at all recommended to me!.
