It's been a couple years since I bought my own, I guess, but anyway, mine works just fine. It's been great. I can't be happier, and I make a lot of booze with it.
In the glass cylinder, dump it and see what floats. You will see the proof of whatever is in the cylinder floating on the surface.
Using an alcoholometer will allow you to gauge your level of intoxication. It would be more accurate to say they are for clean spirits. At home, I might lick some Bourbon and see what it does.
In theory, an alcoholometer can measure specific gravity. If I understand that correctly, a hydrometer can measure specific gravity.

In the photo are three different instruments 1) an alcoholometer/tralle hydrometer, 2) a specific gravity hydrometer, and 3) a glass testing tube with a A specific gravity hydrometer will not be sent to you! As a result, the alcoholometer appears to work reasonably well, however, I am giving it a 1 star due to a deceptive claim. You can't make that up, it's outright An advertisement.
