The water is designed to flow in one direction through this flow meter. Although it may show flow in reverse, there is no way to tell which way the water is flowing. When the wheel turns, it just pulses. In terms of direction, there is no discernible difference. Water should only flow in one direction through it.

I went to a pipe shop and bought some pipes. Not adaptors that are commonly used appear to be effective.
You should be fine as long as the pipe is always filled with water.

When connecting to a PVC threaded connection, I had to use some sealant because the thread is straight rather than tapered.
I initially purchased the 1" model, but it has a different design and is extremely constrained. Even at high flow rates, there is no pressure drop with this one. I'm running it at 5 volts and deciding on pulses at 1 volts. The frequency of the pulse train is indicated by the label as 0. 5 Hz * flow rate in liters/minute, which is the same as what I get when I measure the amount of water. Although the thread is not an exact NPT, it threads and seals well with Sch 40 PVC fittings and Teflon liquid thread dope. To calculate flow rate, I count pulses and measure the pulse interval to a resolution of 100uS. Using a $10 Cypress PSoC CY8CKIT-A, the results are perfect. Try it - This is fantastic!.
It was missing a frequency/flow graph and a formula when it arrived. I'm measuring the flow with an Arduino! So far, I'm not sure if I'd recommend it or not based on the exact flow. I'm hoping to come across such a formula while searching the internet.
I'm using it for an arduino-compatible project, and the only thing I know is that I'll need a lot of high-speed data. To aid in the seal, use high-quality teflon tape.
Both threaded ends are leaking fluid. Something is wrong with the manufacturing process. Hundreds of threaded fittings have been taped into place by me. This is the biggest leak I've ever seen in a pipe. This is the only thing that leaks out of the entire installation, which will take about 4 hours and 5 additional fittings to fix.
