I chose the D3FW over the standard D3 because I needed instant access to Wet Bulb Temperature during outdoor activities, which the D3FW provides in place of Density Altitude. br>br>Wet Bulb Temperature is the temperature of evaporating water when air temperature and humidity are taken into account. As a result, because it is a key criterion in the exchange of moisture between the air and dead forest fuels, it is useful in assessing potential fire danger. br>br>The same measurement is linked to the risk of heat-related illnesses. Because it predicts how effective human perspiration will be at the current air temperature and humidity, it is a good predictor of illness. Perspiration is ineffective at cooling the body during physical activity at a Wet Bulb Temperature of 80F, for example. Even without clothing and in the shade, perspiration does not effectively cool the body at 92F. Finally, a Wet Bulb Temperature of 95F is lethal after 6 hours. br>br>It works as advertised, just like the other Kestrel Drop products. I've been on the lookout for a data logger to use with my model rocket launches. My solution for recording temperature, humidity, and station pressure is to use the Kestrel Data Drop units. I get those and other values using the D3FW, which communicates with the Kestrel App on my smartphone via Bluetooth. As a result, I'm able to view and download days' worth of data. Email a CSV file. I now see how inaccurate and precise my previous assumptions about field conditions were. I can see differences even in my backyard; it's a fantastic system!.
For several years, I've been monitoring temperature and humidity in the rooms of my hatchery with the Kestrel D2 model. We decided to monitor a few more locations, including the weather outside. The D3 is ideal for this because it includes a pressure reading as well as temperature and humidity readings. The logging capabilities of Kestrel drops make them ideal for monitoring temperature and humidity. These connect via Bluetooth and require an Android or iOS app. My building has steel insulated panels on all of the walls, so the range is quite good. The iPhone app is, in my opinion, superior. The Android is a smartphone operating system.
I've only had it for a few weeks and it's already locked up and stopped logging on its own. Unfortunately, it did this on its first outing, so we only got about an hour of data out of our eight-hour outing. Support has been contacted, and a new unit is on its way to me. Plus two stars for outstanding customer service (which is becoming increasingly difficult to come by these days).
On Android, the app is a little sluggish, but it otherwise performs admirably. It's more fun to see real-time conditions rather than relying on a "nearby" weather station on a weather app that's thousands of miles away.
On the iPhone XsMax, the iOS app is practically unusable, so this is a pricey paperweight.
The Drop is fantastic! I'll be getting a couple more to use in different places because they were simple to set up and fun to use.
