This condenser unit will work with objectives up to 40X magnification (typically with a NA of 0. 65) to create a darkfield image of specimens on the microscope stage An oil darkfield condenser may be required instead for objectives with higher magnification or NA. This OMAX darkfield condenser has a dark circle in the middle. Though it came almost perfectly aligned, the two thumb screws were used to center it more precisely. At 40X and 100X, it outperforms the darkfield discs I made at home, and it outperforms them significantly at 400X, though the background is bright enough that it should be called a greyfield condenser at that power. My only complaints are that it doesn't come with any instructions (I had to look up how to adjust it on YouTube), and even though I used it in an OMAX microscope, the fit was so tight that I almost couldn't get it in. Even so, it worked well enough that I'm going to order the higher-power darkfield condenser to go with it.
It's not a good fit for my AMSCOPE model, which has a LED and smaller 23mm objectives, after all of the adjustments and installation. Even at maximum brightness, the dark field was difficult to see. It could be due to the way I'm using it, or it could be something else entirely. I'm keeping it in case I want to try it again or use it when I upgrade to a better microscope.
This condenser is a perfect fit for the Celestron 44104 Biological Microscope, and it works flawlessly. We used it to check for paramecia in our hay infusion at first. The dark field viewing adds a new dimension to these protists, which is very intriguing. There are no instructions included with the unit, so if you're unfamiliar with how to use this type of condenser, I recommend watching a few of the YouTube presentations. It's critical that the opaque disk is centered correctly in relation to the light path of your microscope.
Darkfield observations reveal details that aren't visible in normal light, not to mention how beautiful they are against a black background. This darkfield condenser is of excellent quality, has adjustable settings, and performs admirably. It far outperforms my home-made versions, and I am very pleased with it.
Installing and adjusting this product was a breeze. It performs admirably. I'm not sure if it's any better than a standard darkfield stop, but it's certainly more convenient!.
This is a great deal for the money. It took some time to figure out how to replace the included brightfield condenser with this (search "OMAX M82ES 40X-" on YouTube). More expensive systems will outperform this, especially if you're used to professional equipment, but for student use, it's fantastic. If you require PLAN/oil, go to Amazon and look for that option.
