Shop Fox D3208 Fractional Dial Caliper

Compared to others, this is an excellent deal at $30. In addition to my Starrett caliper, I was looking for a second caliper for woodworking I found this to be a good fit. My shop has a Starrett caliper I use for precision measurements of wood for projects, also used for assembling parts or other tasks around the garage. There was just one problem. I needed something to use outside in my carport where I store my wood and where I do some My cheap Starrett was useless for these "rougher" measurements, and you know what I mean - it's as if I am on a cruise - it's all over in a flash! It is inconvenient to have to bring the caliper back in if you take it to another location and forget to bring it back in In addition, it was more likely that the caliper would drop outside, and at $100 and up, the Starrett wasn't the correct In my opinion, when I saw this Shop Fox caliper on Amazon I bought it primarily because of its price. I did not want to buy too cheap a caliper that might not be accurate, and I read the reviews here to help me make up my mind. Having fractional readings is also critical to woodworking, so I need the caliper to have this feature. Seeing how good this caliper ended up being was a big surprise, although I expected that This is a very good purchase. The set may be all you need if you are a woodworker on a budget. Considering its age, it's well built, sturdy, and accurate, plus it comes with a good storage case. The device has all of the necessary locking mechanisms to hold a measurement, and it does so effectively. In essence, it has all the features of the Starrett caliper I own, but for $70 less. My initial instinct is to say that the Starrett is more accurate and durable to justify the higher price, but I am not sure. As far as I can tell, this caliper is well made, and I don't expect it to break anytime If you pay close attention to the side by side pictures below of the $100 Starrett caliper and the $30 Shop Fox caliper, you will see that they are almost identical. Having products made in the same overseas factory under different brand names and at different price points is a common occurrence in the modern world. comparing these two calipers - there is a large difference between them From the screws down to their design and manufacture, one can see that they are very similar. It's true that the knurled knobs have various textures, the face has a different color or appearance, and other finishing touches that distinguish these items. The kicker is You can see the difference between their weights from the weights of the calipers It is identical to each other. It is likely that a single gram difference is caused by different types of knurled knobs. I am holding, comparing, using these two calipers, and I can tell that in my mind the difference is between the two at least. Based on their similarity, I believe that they were manufactured at Starrett might use high quality stainless steel, maybe they have a higher standard or tolerance for precision, or maybe there are other differences that will not be visible to the naked eye. Since I was a kid, I had one of these. The number of times is in the thousands. There is no question about it This is a tool I have in my tool bag. I always have you with me when it comes to my projects. There is a type of project for every occasion. Those of you who don't know what a caliper is will find this tool takes three measurements A measurement of the inside and outside diameter as well as the depth. This is deemed to be the primary purpose of the outside diameter, which is known as the 'jaws'. The dial is easy to read when you simply roll it open with your thumb, close it, and then read it. On the back, the smaller jaws are perpendicular to the larger ones. It can be used to measure the inside of a hole, or what have you. Last but not least, a 'shaft' emerges from the bottom of the jaws as you open them. When you want to know the depth of a hole, you open it past the depth you need, and simply push down until the bottom of the tool touches the surface. The depth can be determined from the dial. I just wanted to add one more thing The calibration process. Once you've positioned the caliper's needle at zero, close it (make sure the jaws are clean) and then rotate the dial until the needle stands still. Because there is no lock, a bump or just putting it into a toolbag may cause the dial to turn. It is a quick and easy step but one that is necessary. Every time you use the device, make sure it is calibrated. Open and close the booklet a couple of times to ensure you get the same reading each time. However, the recalibration takes only a couple It is useful to be able to repeat measurements with the locking feature. A dotted line every 32nd and 64th affects the means of reading the dial in 1/16th of an inch. Six and a quarter inches is the maximum measurement. There is a collapsed OAL of 9 7/64". The purchase has been very satisfying, and I anticipate it will be an important part of my wood shop for a very long time.
