Both a 420 roller chain and a 40 roller chain have the same pitch, but the 420 is narrower, as such they will not fit together.

Does it have a keyway of a certain size?

The wrong pitch has been thrown! There are 21 teeth on the 5/8" 5/8" for #40 chain and they don't A few things to note about this sprocket it arrived rusted and banged up on the face

My chain wasn't even interchangeable with my #41 chain, which I could have assumed it would since they have the same 1/2" pitch. I cleaned and oiled it only to realize it wasn't even compatible. My project has been set back by this chain. I think it came with a 3/8" chain for #35 chain, but either way it just messed everything up.
