Is it possible to cut these without too much trouble?

No way, no how. These are made of chromed steel that has been hardened. There was no joy with a hand hacksaw, a powered portable DeWalt bandsaw, or a bench bandsaw. I couldn't do anything but scratch the rod. Best wishes to you.

What is the maximum size of gear that will fit in this space? Any one?

I'm not sure what you're asking, to be honest. These mics are almost exactly 8mm in diameter in my examples. I'd say it's entirely up to you as to how they'd go together.

I'm working on a model jet engine and purchased a stainless steel shaft from another buyer

It didn't work because it wasn't smooth or straight enough. After that, I purchased this product in the hopes that it would fit the engine bearings, and it miraculously did. It came with two rods, which was a nice touch (in case one melted). They were also incredibly smooth, thanks to the precision of the machine. Overall, the product is of excellent quality.

Rod stock that is both beautiful and clean

One of these rods served a unique purpose for me. I made "hair pins" out of washers and drilled holes in the end. "I drilled a straight line through our outdoor table frame, through the outdoor umbrella post, and back through the table frame, and this new rod goes through the hole I drilled to keep the umbrella from blowing up and away like it has in the past. ".
