In my case, the gearbox was very stiff when I bought it, so I opened it up and saw that it had been coated with excessive grease, so I washed it all off and applied new grease, and it now If you're willing to put in 0, it would be fine. The cost of gear grease is a few bucks and an hour's worth of work.
