For flat stock, it is fine. Jointing edges with this is much more effective. If you are using it as an off feed roller for a table saw and jointer milling the flat side of a board or for sheet goods, using eight roller balls per 2x4 works best. To prevent material coming out of the feed hopper from drifting left or right, an alignment bar like this needs to be correctly positioned. It is less likely for material to drift off a table saw with roller balls embedded in it. The roller balls give the needed support for edge jointing a long board, but they are useless for edge jointing a board with two edges.

Everything about these things works perfectly. They were used to make extension tables for table saws.
