There is about an inch between the inner end of the bolt and the outer end. They are designed to be used with 1/4" cables.

It is the cheapest I have found so far. In my case, I use them to connect 1/4 inch welding wire livestock panels together. I've found it to be more durable than any other method I've discovered to keep them connected. The products are of the highest You will not find a better price!.
