It is ultimately unclear what caused the lid latch to malfunction

However, the lid latch failed, so it's quiet enough to use, but doesn't do the job as well as it should. If we want the lid mechanism to stay engaged, we will need to put two heavy books on the lid as it spins. After a certain point, the books would wobble off on their own if left.
