How much crystal should be added to the distilled water? Do you know what isopropyl alcohol is? How do you etch sterling silver with it? How do you mix it?

In 100 grams of water, you should be able to dissolve *175 grams of Ferric Nitrate Nonahydrate. It would be better if I used a lower concentration. All of the above in 50%. Be aware that heating and mixing the etchant is great for speeding up the process. The organic molecules will counteract the reduction of solution viscosity with IPA. In my experience, I have not used IPA but it is expected the viscosity will not reduce with IPA. Could it be? It's my fault. Many variables are at play in the business world.

Is the hydrate any different from pure ferric nitrate in terms of what it does to the crystals?

A non-profit organization Ferric nitrate is in crystal form, not liquid, when it is referred to as hydrate. For your formula you should just add distilled water in the amount needed to make a liquid form. It works for storage much better than in powder form

Product is great, and dry crystals are safer to handle than liquid crystals. Etches beautifully with just some distilled water! Mixes very easily and mixable! The recommended mix for silver etching is 400 milliliters distilled water in combination with 300 grams crystals.
