It is not recommended to use the threads in aluminum, instead they are suited to wood or sheet When attempting to screw the unit directly into the aluminum structure, failure will result, if a small pilot hole is not drilled in the aluminum, because the aluminum will feel like it is galling, weakening the connection, and causing the unit to wobble and fail. You might be better off tapping your metal screws to get more "threads per inch" in the material, then using hooks with threads designed to thread into the tapped hole instead.
They will work under wood framing mounted to ceiling framing if they are screwed into the wood framing. The plastic inserts might be pulled out of their mounting if the canopy were to get snagged in the event the flange of the plastic insert did not rest securely against the drywall top wall compared to if the insert were installed into plasterboard ceiling.
There is a diameter of about 1/8". You should be able to handle light or medium weight plants. I would advise you against heavyweight plants. It's very lightweight as long as you use the hollow wall anchors that come with it.

I hate the wall anchors that come with products! SMOOSHED but did not morph. The hooks are made of metal and are also very sturdy.
I needed stainless to hang their shades because corrosion could never occur. Perfect! They are exactly what I am looking for. An excellent value at a high level of quality.
I purchased this as a good buy since there are so many Several plants used to be hung from macrame holders when I was a kid.
Since it has been 4 months since I installed it outside for keeping a key to my gate, there is no rusting, so I believe that it will hold up outdoors well. We are very happy with the way the install went.
We were impressed with how fast these were to install and how strong they held. I had to bend the anchors as I hammered them into the wall since they were fairly thin. This can be fixed by placing the screw just inside the anchor, holding its form, and then hammering the top of the screw into place.
There's some reason why hook anchors are hard to find, I don't know why. My plant pots can be hung on this rack and it works well.
They are 7/8 by 2 inches and stainless steel. From the picture of the hand, these seem to be a bit smaller than I thought, but I was still able to wear them.
The screws do what they are supposed to do. They have not rusted.
