Yes, these do the trick. I had made a custom pin header out of these for the same reason, but I had purchased several different kinds and was unable to locate these until much later. I seem to have a lot of extras of these, as well as the ones that aren't long enough.

What is the maximum board-to-board distance supported by this header? I assume the pins beneath the black spacers on the pcb are included in the 20mm measurement. ?

20mm is the length of the pin. The pin extends about 16 inches above the bottom of the black spacer (the board's top surface). 17mm.
