Is there a variety of shapes to choose from?

In what number of pieces is a set considered complete?

There are 3 parts to the socket head - clip on, strain relief, and strain relief clip. Three pieces of the picture comprise one set on the RHS.

Is it possible to make one cable end with just one piece?

You will need one of the pieces with the forks and one of the clips for a typical cable end. In order to make sure that the ribbon cable conductors fit into the grooves of the connector, make sure that they are aligned. Lastly, you'll want to be sure the red colored conductor (the one marked by an arrow on one side of the connector) lines up with Pin1. In order to assist in seating the conductors squarely on the terminals, you can use a pair of parallel-jawed pliers.

They were used to build the new Apple IIe Super. I had no problems with the connectors. They were used to build new Apple IIe Super Serial cards. The connector should be put on one end, and the DB9 should be.

You won't find a better deal anywhere! There is a significant cost difference between computers and traditional electronic distributors. As for the quality, it looks good too.
