What is the lowest and highest point of the range? Could it be used in a car's gas tank, for instance?

This is JSN, and I'd like to introduce myself. The minimum range of the SR04T ultrasonic sensor module is 20cm. You cannot use an ultrasound or an infrared sensor inside a gas tank; instead, you should use an ODB or CAN bus to get the values.

What is the standard length of the wire that comes with it?

This JSN- Although the SRR04T is waterproof, it cannot be used underwater.

Is it possible to use it on plastic? I have a water tank and don't want to drill a hole in the top. Is it possible to use a plastic wall to accomplish this?

It uses an ultrasonic "ping" to determine the distance to the water, which the plastic will then block. It's also important to keep in mind that the sensor must be mounted at least 9 or 10 inches above the highest water level.

The SR- The HC- 04t is the water-resistant version of the HC- The SR04 Ultrasonic Sensor is a device that detects the presence of ultrasonic waves. br>br>It does not, and I repeat, does not, measure distance underwater (sorry, DIY Sub makers). However, in a wet environment, you can use this to determine distance. This is the sensor to use if you're creating an application that triggers when someone enters a perimeter and it's raining. br>br>The HC- will be shorted out.
