Depending on which version you have (spst, spdt, or momentary), it works like a regular switch. It's possible that the rubber boot you see is perplexing; it's there to keep the weather out. It appears to be a regular toggle switch without it. This switch is of good quality.

The blue sea systems toggle switch has a fantastic weatherproof cover. I would strongly suggest it.
On my boat, I used this switch as a remote on/off switch for an amplifier. It's a breeze to set up and it works perfectly. It's constantly exposed to the elements, so being waterproof is a must.
