A file can easily remove metal from mild steel rods, so selecting mild steel means you can easily leave the rods mild (the weld should hold the rod easily) and start the die so the end of the rod has a bevel on it.

The chucking reamer also helped by keeping the hole size exact, not over or under sized, not drilling over or under size. I always drill under size then bore the holes with a small boring bar leaving a small percentage from the reamer for In any case, the muzzle device must be kept concentric with the bore and the barrel threads should always be held concentric to it, for obvious reasons. Hand threading of a barrel, especially when it has to do with a barrel, could be risky. The thought of it would never occur to me.
These are taps and dies sold under name brands in the United States. It turns out that the majority of brands made in the United States are actually made in China, so I decided to go straight to the source. Having said that, it did perform well for me, even though I don't know if it will hold up to as much stress as a major brand set will. A steel pipe and a gun barrel were used with the die, and a stainless steel bushing was used with the tap.
Worked well for thread chasing on a 6 inch machine. The Creedmoor barrel is a 5 inch It's good to have on hand if you're shooting barrels with threads larger than 30 calibers.
My plan was to make bushings to go from a barrel threaded 1/2 28 TPI to a barrel threaded 5/8 24 TPI so I could thread a stud. The suppressor is engaged on the 308 rifle. The thread is not the smoothest that you've ever seen, but it still works.
There is no project for them yet so they are in a toolbox.
The tap and die set worked perfectly and for a great price. I used it for my 308 and 300AAC builds.
Tap and die set that you can't go wrong with. I just used mine yesterday for the seventh cut. Pre tap your hole with a 9/16 bit and you'll be done. My company has successfully cut aluminum and 316 stainless steel with no issues. My only regret is that I will need to replace mine when it wears.
