Then I used those to re-create If you tap a cross, you can A threaded grip screw hole was found on an AR lower receiver, and I was able to straighten the threads using some gun oil and careful attention to torque and insertion angle. I was happy with the result. Although the box in which they were kept was clearly damaged, the contents of the box were not. An old piece of packaging tape was used to tape it back together after it was broken. I did notice, even though I didn't plan on it. I think it's kind of unprofessional to send a product like that when you can replace the container quite easily. The provider's carelessness does not seem to be a thing that will be repeated by other customers.
The size of this bottom tap was not available in retail stores near me. There would be a back-order and you would have to wait an unknown amount of time. This dilemma is compounded by the fact that some orders from Amazon take forever to arrive. We chose to order from Amazon because they are at least able to keep track of orders no matter how long they take, unlike I got it in less than a week (5 business days), which here in Hawaii is amazing. Overall, I am satisfied with how the job was done. I like the fact that it goes from the surface into the hole without wobbling (which is usually a problem with bottom taps). It cuts clean and sharp with no burrs (did not really have to burnish it), and it removes chips well. I am not sure how long the batteries will last, but I can see them lasting a long time with the amount of use I give them occasionally.
A series of special aluminum parts was tapped using the taps. It is OK to use carbon steel when the right lubrication is used. It was very similar to the plug tap in that it had a rather large taper. It did not provide me with the 1 to 2 threads I needed for my blind counterbore, which was exactly what I purchased it for. The specification does not appear to be clear to me. It is my opinion that the Irwin brand of carbon steel is better than its generic counterpart.
The tap is of high quality. These tools worked very well on aluminum, (non-hardened) 1/4" thick steel plates, and did an excellent job tapping both materials. The best results can be achieved by using good cutting oil.
This gave me the ability to retap threads on an AR pistol grip, and it.
Any tool can be used for its intended purpose. In the course of my work, I use these taps to "chase" threads in machined threads. A great deal of work is done by them. They appear to be very well made and are lasting for quite some time. In the future, I would purchase those products again.
It was a simple matter to rethread my AR lower's handle screw threads. I saved $130 by doing this!.
Despite it being hard to find, this tap worked perfectly for me and I couldn't be happier.
