The standard is fine if you're only cutting a dovetail where the bevel is at the surface of your material or slightly recessed; I had a large sliding dovetail where the bevel didn't start until quite a bit deeper. To do this, I needed a longer shank. I hope this information is useful.
Selected User Reviews For Freud 1/2" (Dia.) Dovetail Bit with 1/4" Shank (22-124)
Very sharp, long shank; worked well with HF porter cable bushings in my application. Be aware that the bit attaches to the shank via a collar; I was concerned that it wouldn't fit in my collet, but it did.
It was exactly as described, and it did the job of making dovetails.
This was purchased to go with my Micro Jig dovetail clamps. When I used my existing dovetail bit, I thought my clamps weren't working very well, but when I used this bit, which definitely matches the clamps' specs, the dove tail clamps worked perfectly; I'll probably have to buy some more of those now.
I came here thanks to Microjig Matchfit. They're ideal for routing grooves for their proprietary and universal hardware. While it lacks Microjig's patented soft edge, it's a good compromise for getting this bit into a 1/4in collet.
I avoid generic brand bits in favor of good brand bits because they are more durable and well-made. This is what I'm using to route a dovetail in my shop fixtures so that I can use the MicroJig dovetail clamps, and it works great.
It's difficult to top a Sigmund Freud joke. However, some of the less expensive options are getting close.
Everything went according to plan.
Even after hitting a piece of metal with my dovetail jig by accident, it cuts cleanly.
