Questions & Answers

What are the measurements of the small and large buckets?

The large one measures 9 3/4" wide, 7" deep, 8 3/4" tall, and 16" tall with the lid open, which was important to me because my cabinets are 15 1/2 inches above the counter. As a result, I have to pull it in front of the cabinets in order for it to fully open. It appears to be worthwhile because I had to empty the small one every day, and the bag is held in place by the removable rim. I don't mind letting it fill up for 2 or 3 days because it does such a good job of trapping the bad odors inside. The small one measures 7" wide by 7" deep (7 1/2 if you count the tab in front), 7" tall by 14 1/2 with the lid open. Both of them taper at the bottom, making them a little smaller.

Is it safe to put it in the dishwasher?

Because the container has two layers, I wouldn't put it in the dishwasher. Dish soap and water are required. Cleaning up is a breeze.

Is it possible to freeze it?

Yes, this is possible. My daughter saves hers for later.

The 3 gallon BioBags work well
5/5

Because Amazon lists multiple versions of OXO compost bins under the same listing, this review is for the "new" 1. One of the things I was concerned about before purchasing was whether the 3 gallon Bio Bags would be too large. They are not, in my opinion. They're a little big, but I like that there's enough extra bag to tie it closed. I've included a photo that depicts the amount of waste that will be generated once the bin is full. Bag management holes (one in the front and one in the back) in the bin allow excess bag material to be stuffed. The bag is hidden from view from the outside once the removable lid base is in place, and both of these features prevent the bag from being drawn into the bin. (I despise it when this occurs!) )br>br>Another feature that stands out in my opinion is the lid. Yes, it will stay open when fully opened and upright for extended periods of time if needed. But there are times when I just want to toss a small item in, so I like that the lid design allows for quick and easy one-handed access. a two-handed operation I could have a peel in one hand and lift up on the cover's overhanging tab with the other hand by simply extending a knuckle (as shown in one of my photos). I didn't realize I needed this until we got it, so I thought I'd mention it. The smooth operation of the lid, I believe, also contributes to this comfort. br>br>We used to have a Zero Waste Together compost bin, but I prefer the OXO because it:
- possesses excess bag management (bag does not fall/be dragged into the bin)br>- The lid is not pierced by holesbr>- does not have a latch (one less thing to worry about)br>Note that the Zero Waste bin does come with brackets to hang it if that's what you want to do. We had been using it as a countertop bin and had never gotten used to it. br>br>In general, I'm pleased with this purchase. I also hope you found this review to be beneficial.

Although this is a good product, I have discovered that glass jars and metal containers are superior
3/5

It's a handy little plastic bin that you can keep in the fridge and use once or twice a week. The only reason I took away stars was because I came up with a better solution that involved using square-shaped objects. Ish glass jars with flip top clasp sealed lids work just as well as plastic jars but don't contribute to the waste stream. So, if you're trying to go zero waste and don't want to add more plastic to the environment, there are good glass jars and metal tins that work just as well and can hold a lot more due to the greater variety of shapes and sizes.

We were able to solve our Fruit Fly issues! **Updated after a year**- It is still one of our favorites
5/5

It's something I use on a daily basis and it's fantastic. br>br>This product has saved us from having to deal with fruit flies on a regular basis! In our house, we eat a lot of fruit. Huge banana fans, and it's difficult to keep fruit flies at bay when there are always peels in the trash for them to lay eggs in. I purchased this item along with an outdoor compost bin and am very happy with it! It has a large capacity, and the lid is extremely thin, leaving no opening for flies to enter. The handle is made of extra strong material. I really like how easily the top/Lid can be removed. This model is superior to any of the others with built-in filters in my opinion. I've actually brought fruit flies into the house because the outdoor composter isn't too far away (we don't have a lot of land), and the flies simply die because they can't find anything to eat or lay eggs in. It has been a fantastic experience. When I see a single fruit fly, I am no longer alarmed.

Compost bin that is well-designed and attractive - Best of all time! This Compost Bin is one of my favorites
5/5

It's extremely well-designed. They put it through its paces in every way. It's so much easier to operate with one hand than it was with my old steel compost bin, which required lifting a lid. The lid is easily lifted and lowered. When it's time to empty it, the lid comes off. There are no nooks or crannies for food to get stuck in because the plastic inside is super smooth. The majority of the waste simply slides off, and then all you have to do is rinse it and you're ready to go. I'm also no longer required to purchase compost bags. When it's on the counter, it has no odor. The only thing I'd change is that it's too small (for which I'd give it four 1/2 stars if I could). I believe it has the potential to be twice as large - It would be fantastic if it were a bit wider and taller. Otherwise, it's a fantastic product; I was concerned that the plastic would look tacky on my counter, but it's so well designed that it even looks classy on my granite!.

This bin is ideal for storing scraps for composting
5/5

This bin is ideal for storing composting scraps on the counter. This isn't a composter, just to be clear. Composting is a long-term process that breaks down organic material (such as vegetable scraps and egg shells) into compost, which is good garden soil. I recently purchased a Bokashi Composting Starter Kit (which includes the ingredients for breaking down organic waste scraps). br>br>I keep scraps like banana peels and cucumber skins in this OXO bin next to my cutting board. I put the scraps in the composter about every two days or so. This is advantageous because the odor is minimized. It also restricts the amount of time I can open and close my Bokashi Composting bin, which is supposed to be kept to a bare minimum.

It is not something I would suggest
3/5

This seemed like it would be ideal for my kitchen compost, but it didn't work out. Because there are no holes for air to flow in and out, a lot of moisture built up inside, causing a foul odor and ripping the compost bags. Furthermore, you are unable to remove the foul odor. I've washed it several times and even soaked it in vinegar for three days, but nothing seems to work. I was extremely dissatisfied with my purchase and felt that I had squandered my funds. I threw it away after about two weeks of use.
