They won't come off if you wash your hands - Instead of absorbing water, they absorb it and eventually become ineffective; however, they last a long time - up to a year. Only twice a year does my son (for whom we purchased them) change the filters.
They are, in fact, used in conjunction. The square one goes in the very top of the inside of the lid of the bin I have, while the round one sits in the middle. br>By doing so, you'll be able to filter odors twice as effectively.

These were purchased to go with my EPICA Stainless Steel Compost Bin 1. 3 gallon with a square filter on top and a round filter underneath. These are sturdy yet simple to insert and remove, and they definitely help to keep all odors contained (I don't smell the compost until I remove the lid). I clean the filters every now and then, and they seem to last at least 6 months, if not longer.
What a bargain on filters that need to be replaced more frequently. The fit was perfect, and after a day or two, we didn't smell anything. There should be enough filters for a couple of years, but we'll order more as soon as they become available.
Much less expensive than buying one round/1 square set at the store, which costs $4. For dog walks, I keep the flies at bay by using a compost pail. I have another one in the house that I use for garbage. They perform admirably.
My composter will love it! Epica Stainless Steel Compost Bin is a top-rated compost bin made of stainless steel. 3 Gallon- Includes a Charcoal Filterbr>These are extremely effective at reducing odors. This book comes highly recommended.
You don't realize how well these things work until you've got a lot of stinky garbage in there and have to open the lid. It's impossible to shut it quickly enough.
They're identical to the ones that came with our stainless compost bin - enough to keep you going for a long time!.
I get a whiff of stinky compost every time I come close to the pail, and when the lid is removed, there is even more smell than before.
