Questions & Answers

Are charcoal filters usually changed every few months or every couple of years?

August of 2020 will be the date we purchase this. In the past, I have never changed or bought new filters and I always place half a paper towel in the bottom when empty. As long as the filter doesn't have mildew on it, I spray it off and hang it with a magnetic clip on my fridge to dry, and I haven't had a maggot and filled it with compost. There is a chance the charcoal will fall out of the filter after you rinse it, though it is not a serious problem. The Nashville company we use to pick up our compost picks it up once a week, so we put the great little bin into a bigger bin we keep near the Our procedures are set up to open up that thing as quickly as possible to avoid stink. I like this container very much. If you use it regularly like we do, it is attractive, easy to use, and easy to clean.

Rusted stainless steel is what happened to mine. What will happen to the plastic insert if it is put into contact with organic material? My regular practice is to empty it. What are its odor-absorbing capabilities and discoloring characteristics?

Having purchased my EcoCrock in May 2013, I have used it continuously ever since. In addition, the exterior and insert are still in like-new condition. There is no smell or discoloration that I can detect. In order to make sure all the contents of the insert come out easily, we placed a folded paper towel on the bottom. Thus far, I have been very satisfied with it.

In the process of unpacking the filter, we lost the green item holding it together. Could you please let us know where we can get a replacement?

If you want to contact the company, you can do so by calling The phone is answered by a real (nice) person! Replace it with another one, and you won't have to pay for shipping. Since I bought this product a few years ago, I was missing a piece of it or it broke, so I used Although it can be annoying when the filter slips out, you can often lodge the filter in place and it will usually stay there.

It is possible to use a biodegradable plastic bag Could you please line this bin with a bag?

There is a possibility that the end of the metal handle on the interior bin will break off and leak into the bio-bin An airbag. If you use a rubber band to hold the bag in place while you put the interior bin into the ceramic bucket, you'll save yourself a lot of hassle. Upon viewing the bag, you will be able to see it This plastic lid is designed to be attached to the interior bin, not to the ceramic exterior of the bin. It isn't that it doesn't fit, just that you can still see the bag through the I have updated There appears to be a difference between the older and newer My model (purchased September 2016) has a lid that fits onto the plastic bin. Older models have ceramic parts that fit over the lids. The plastic bin inside my lid is not usable without the lid.

There is a problem with the new lid and it will not screw into place
3/5

Since purchasing my first compost bin, I have used it extensively. Only because I broke the old one did I buy a new one in November 2016. I was very happy with it. My copy of the device seems to be a slightly newer one. It appears that the lid is either defective or the design of the new lid was not carefully thought through Like the old model, the new lid does not fit over the white part correctly, like it did in the past. Sadly, the lid I received today is too small to fit over the outer container (as with the previous lid). This does fit the inner bucket, but when the inner bucket is placed inside the outer bucket, when the lid is pushed up, it hangs on the Despite being able to seal the container, it can be easily knocked off by accident. There are two design flaws responsible for this of the lid rests on the inner bucket below the top edge of the outer container, so it is forced to rest on an exterior container instead of the inner 2) because the outer container has a different shape from As a result, the lid is defective or poorly designed, which prevents the bin from being properly In the end, I returned the product. I wish I had kept the lid from the old one.

Designed to hold kitchen waste destined for compost piles or yard waste bins, this countertop solution is nice to look at
4/5

Designed to hold kitchen waste destined for compost piles or yard waste bins, this countertop solution is nice to look at. I was pleasantly surprised by the white ceramic exterior, which is much heavier than I had expected, while the black plastic lid and the green liner bucket are well made and easy to clean. Having it in your kitchen is quite nice since it's quite cute and quite decorative. Chef'n has a downside in that mold grows on it. There are fewer vent holes in the lid than in other compost bins I have used, so moisture has a harder time escaping. As an example, I usually condense the steam from my espresso grounds on the inside of the lid in place of escaping through the filter and evaporating from the bin. I can create the perfect environment for mold to grow on the filter, so if I don't empty and clean it every couple of days, it quickly turns into Despite all its flaws, our old bin didn't collect moisture, remained mostly dry, and most of its contents were moldy Free of charge. In order to solve the problem, I'm going to need to drill bigger holes, but it seems to be a serious flaw in the design.

It is not helpful to have the handle
3/5

That is just the right size for my window sill, and it looks amazing. If the rest of your hand is dirty, it is easy to lift the lid by the sprout with 2 small fingers. However, a big factor in purchasing it was the removable pail with a handle, but it turned out that the handle would not fit over the lid of the pail. As I take the compost from my apartment to the yard, I have three options carry the pail without a lid, stinking up the hallway and letting flies in just haul the pail or haul the pail with a lid with a lid. The pail will not serve its purpose if it has to carry the whole bin, including the ceramic base. If I could carry the inner pail by the handle rather than taking off the lid, then it would be much more convenient.

This is what I've found works
4/5

Composting is new to us, so we needed a bin to store our waste so we don't have to bring it out every day. The majority of countertop crocks were very "country" in Compared to its predecessor, this one has a more modern feel, but isn't very This system seems to be working fine so far. The smell is not offensive. It holds enough that we do not have to empty it more than once a week (2 people in a household) so I like its size. There are no plastic liners in our toilets. Another person mentioned that they like that they can open it with one hand. I agree with this. Every time we wash the bucket, we put a paper towel in the bottom. It comes in handy when I am holding a knife or food in the other hand. The one complaint I have with the purchase is that it looked used when I received it. manufacturer did not appear to have taped shut the box in a way that looked like it had been done by them. I noticed that the black plastic lid on the box was old and worn-looking, that one of the two charcoal filters was not packaged in plastic, and that the edges of the green bin were scuffed up. In this case I did not hesitate to use the filter since it appeared to be new. It worked out for me however that the green bin was marred by the grease marks, so that was non-electronic. I can't do anything about the lid, the finish is worn off in places so part of the lid looks shiny and part looks The week I received my compost bin I was too busy to send it back, and my compost bin is adorable, but I doubt anyone will look that closely at it. This is a great product and I would recommend it to others though I suspect the problem I encountered may not be common.

We need to protect the planet! As part of my community, I recently signed up for a new composting service
5/5

To save time, I bought two of these countertop composters, one for home use and one for work use, so I don't have to constantly visit the large compost pail in my garage. In spite of the fact that they are not intrusive (in fact, they are quite cute) there is no As well as compostable bags, I purchased ziploc bags so I will not have to clean them I simply remove the bags and place them in my large composter a couple of times a week. There is a small footprint, but they contain a lot of contents. I wish I could have purchased more!.
