Recently, I purchased this to put in my dresser drawers and closets to get rid of any mustiness that may have caused my clothes not to smell so Despite the fact that I cannot smell well right now, my husband says it seems to be working. My package was a little oily or greasy, and I wasn't really sure why, but I think there was some fragrance on it, but the cedar blocks themselves were dry to the touch, and I didn't have any problems with splinters, as others have said. There are two nice things about these cedar blocks, they're long and thick, as well as the perfect size to put in drawers or hang in closets with the included strings as all of the cedar blocks come pre-packaged with strings Ideally, you should have been drilled through the middle so you can thread a string through to hang them up. The cedar blocks can be maintained with a bit of sandpaper included in the kit, so they can get a little refresh here and there. My recommendation for this product doesn't stop there I'm thinking of buying another set in fact.
