Questions & Answers

How long does it take to assemble?

The entire cabinet must be put together. It's very nice and sturdy if you put it together correctly.

Is there a divider/pen and pencil tray in the top (and/or second) drawer?

Greetings, br> There are no dividers in the drawers; they are just plain storage drawers.

Is it possible to use this cabinet without the casters, and if so, how tall would it be?

Greetings, br>It is possible to assemble the cabinet without the casters, but this is not recommended. The bottom panel of the cabinet could be damaged if it is placed directly on the floor.

Is there a lock on each of the three drawers? or only the one on the bottom?

Yes, all three of them are locked.

I DESPERATELY wanted to give this a five-star rating
3/5

I'm disappointed because I had high hopes for it. If the color was as described, it would be a five-star rating. It's adequate for the task at hand. This cabinet came in an espresso finish, which I really liked. There isn't any espresso in this. It is completely dark. As a result, it won't look right next to the desk I'll be using. I photographed it next to two espresso-colored pieces of furniture I own, and even my phone's poor camera can clearly show that it is not the advertised color. I understand that colors may differ slightly from one company to the next, but this is BLACK, and calling it espresso is simply incorrect. Assembly: br>br>Instructions: br>br>Instructions: br>br>Instructions To begin with, the reviews that claim it has a lot of parts and is difficult to assemble are exaggerated. In fact, there are exactly 20 pieces in the set. Plus hardware, there are five per drawer and five for the main body. In my experience, putting it together is no more difficult than putting together any other flat-pack furniture if you take your time. The instructions aren't great, and at one point they told me to install part of the locking mechanism backwards, but they're still usable. From opening the box to rolling the finished file into place, it took me about two hours to put together. Using an electric screwdriver would probably cut that time in half. Quality of Construction: br>br> It is made of MDF (medium density fiberboard). This isn't a cabinet made of solid wood or thick metal that costs $300. Knowing that, it's excellent value for money. It's sturdy, but I wouldn't use it as a step stool or to keep your lead weight collection on it. I've got my desktop tower atop it and I'm not worried about anything. It's never about to break. The drawers have simple metal wheel rails and fiber board bottoms, so a few extra pounds won't be an issue, and the bottom drawer has hanging rails for letter-sized hanging files. The key. br>br> well. You're barking up the wrong tree if you think an $80 filing cabinet will provide security. It works in the sense that when you turn the key, the drawers close. A child or nosy roommate will be kept out if all three drawers are locked at the same time, but anyone who really wants to see what's in there will probably break the mechanism with a few forceful pulls. That bothers me because I didn't buy it for this purpose. br>br>Finally, the wheels can be removed without affecting the bottom drawer's ability to open (though I recommend using a few extra screws on the wheel rails holding the drawer if you do this, as the bottom drawer's wheel bears a lot of weight). The cabinet is slightly less than 23 inches tall without the wheels. br>br>Conclusion: As long as you're aware that this is MDF flat pack furniture (and that it's BLACK, not ESPRESSO! ), you'll be fine. ) For the price, I think it's a great deal. If you're looking for true security or a cabinet to pass down through the generations, you're looking in the wrong price range. This is a good choice if, like me, you only need a small, low-cost, high-quality hanging fill cabinet to help you stay organized.

I couldn't make up my mind about how to rate it
5/5

I had a hard time deciding on a rating because the cabinet itself is a "5" for me, but the "ad" did not mention the required assembly. br>br>One of the questions/answers stated that "some assembly is required. " "The last time I purchased a file cabinet that required "some assembly," it arrived in a large box, and the "assembly" consisted of attaching the bottom wheels. br>br>This full-size cabinet was packaged in a 7-inch-high box. It came with an instruction booklet that was about the same size as the Manhattan Phone Book. br>br>If you aren't particularly good at following instructions (as I am), make sure you have someone on hand who is. I'm fortunate in that I have a son who is capable of such tasks. br>br>It took him almost three hours of steady work to put it all together. I even by-passed- Installation of the locking system was completed successfully. br>br>Fortunately, he brought his own work screwdriver, because the one they provided is only about 4 inches long, and there are a zillion screws to fasten down. He claimed that if he had to use the one provided, he would have given up about a third of the way through. br>br>And, despite the complexity, all of the pieces were well-fitting and simple to assemble. (This isn't always the case with pre-assembled items)br>br>Having said that, once assembled, it's a very nice little cabinet for the money. All of the drawers glide smoothly, which is the most important feature. Certainly not one you'd use in a crowded office, but it's ideal for storing my personal papers at home.

P O SITIVE OUTCOME TOTAL
3/5

What a waste of time. Why I gave it two stars instead of one is a mystery to me. Perhaps because it is, after all, a set of drawers on wheels, much like the description suggests. AS A RESULT, THE FOLLOWING IS TO BE EXPECTED
- It's made of the cheapest MDF and the most flimsy metal you can imagine.
- They didn't even finish trimming the sticker veneer, so you'll have to break through it all by yourself.
- It comes in about 600 pieces, with dreadful instructions and illogical labels.
- The list of parts is incorrect.
- You don't have the correct number of screws.
- The lock is a piece of junk. If you wanted to, you could rip the drawer open. It's possible that a child or a small pet will be kept out.
- It was scratched when it arrived.
- It took a long time to arrive.
- Unless you get it for $40 or less, you will almost certainly overpay for it. Hopefully, this will be the case. I believe I paid around $80 for it. NO BUENO.
- in the end Simply take your most valuable possessions and BURN THEM, because putting this thing together and having a place to store them is simply not worth it. *cries out*.

Manufacturers must improve their file cabinet piece measurements
3/5

First re: assembly. The bottom "boards" of the drawers and the back side of the file cabinet's board are just cheap thin pieces of painted particle board that are just off enough to prevent the backs of the drawers and the top of the cabinet from being flush mounted. Because I don't have many tools in my apartment to properly shave down these boards, I used a screwdriver to try to make the slot/groove deep enough for these boards to fit into. Of course, doing so removes some of the paint from the solid pieces of wood, and I still couldn't get it deep enough to complete the installation properly, so it's not a professional-looking job. Second, if you're going to have a "locked" / secured cabinet, is it really necessary to have this thin particle board on the back side? One more solid piece of wood for the back would make it much more secure, and I'm sure it wouldn't have a significant impact on the manufacturer's bottom line. If you want to keep your items stored in the cabinet more secure, replace the cheap particle board with a better quality one and replace the lock cylinder as well.
