I wouldn't use it in a microwave, but I don't see why it couldn't be used in a toaster oven. You must look at it while the door is shut to get an accurate reading. To be able to see the dial, you'll need a toaster oven with a window. Guy Hammer is a registered professional engineer.

At a lower range, it works fine

Check the oven's settings. I wouldn't go above 390-words. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees.

Thermometer readings that are accurate

My wall oven dates back to the 1960s. The thermostat in the oven has failed. I'm able to keep track of the temperature now. When I set my oven to 375 degrees, it actually heats up to 450 degrees. The oven isn't being replaced by my landlord. I'm working with this fantastically low-cost gadget.

Junk! I needed to check the temperature in my oven for high-heat baking, but after the first use, this thermometer became unusable. It was impossible to decipher what was written.
