When I bought it, the description said it could hold two cups, but I only got one. When you tried to grind something in it, things kept flying out of the mortar because it only had half the advertised capacity. The seller initially stated that they would send a 2 cup replacement, but later changed their mind and did not do so. As a result, they receive a one-star rating for their product! I'll rethink this review if they ever deliver on their original promise of a 2 cup capacity mortar and pestle. Otherwise, this review will be kept on the site as a warning to other potential buyers that the mortar you receive may differ from what is shown and advertised.
It's a lot bigger and heavier than I thought it would be. There were no cracks or breaks in the packaging, and I had no issues with it. To assist in grinding, the pestle's end has a rough edge. The inside of the mortar has a rough texture and grooves; I haven't used it yet, but I'm confident it will do the job perfectly.
I keep it in front of me for quick tasks like crushing peppercorns and coriander for a recipe, and I don't wash it. I simply swipe as much ground powder as I can into the dish I'm preparing with my fingers, then stow the mortar and pestle to the back of the counter. On my counter, it's a lovely and practical tool! I've had trouble finding good salt and pepper grinders, so I just use this and store the ground salt and pepper in small jars with lids. I try to put money into things that will last a long time. high-quality and long-lasting I've been looking for high-quality products for my home, and this has exceeded my expectations! When it comes to grinding comfort, I usually place my palm on the handle end and crush. Because I don't wrap my hand around it and "stir" it to crush it, the short length hasn't been an issue for me. I would strongly suggest it.
It's nice and big and heavy, so it'll handle even the toughest grinding jobs with ease. There's no need to be concerned about it tipping over due to excessive pressure or movement. The granite on the outside is identical to the beautiful polished granite used in high-end kitchen countertops. The interior, however, where the crushing occurs, is unfinished, as it should be. The best way to grind and crush ingredients is to use unfinished stone granite, which is superior to marble, porcelain, and corian. Because of the natural sturdy grip with moist hands, I would have purchased this same mortar if it came in full unfinished granite. On my counter, however, the polished exterior looks quite nice. Other brands of this size were available unpolished, but their prices were higher, which I find absurd given that no effort was required to polish it! br>br>I used it to crush flake-sized mediterranean sea salt with ease, and the salt came out of the interior as well as any polished surface without pieces clinging to the granite; I ground my whole balled leaves oregano to a fine ground powder, and it released a fresh and natural aroma that I didn't think was possible after being stored in a jar in my cabinet for over a year. I'm sure it's simple to clean, but I've never needed to because everything brushes clean and leaves no residue. br>br>The reason you want something so large, as opposed to the smaller varieties, is that this is the kind used by upscale Mexican restaurants to make fresh guacamole at your table. You can serve it right out of the bowl, which looks classy on your counter, if you use a large enough bowl to make a decent amount. br>br>Considering the item's high quality and superb granite molding/construction, it is an excellent value.
Because the bottom flat spot is ground off center, the bowl's top plane is about 20 degrees off horizontal. Now that I know that, I can see why the listing photos struck me as odd. This tilt may be intended to make the mortar more ergonomic, but I find it to be quite inconvenient to use.
br>br>A little tip for new buyers: don't tap on your pestle or mortar, keep it clean so it doesn't get mucky, (and always grind in a circular motion AROUND the bowl), and don't tap. ans put it back in the box when you're done, and the risk of it breaking or shattering won't be an issue.
The pestle was broken in half when it arrived on December 11 (I ordered it on December 7). I've e- I sent an email to the seller about it, but have yet to receive a response. Aside from that, it's stunning, and the measurements were exactly as stated. Because it was a Christmas present, I have yet to use it, but I have noticed that it leaves a powder residue. That should go away once we season it. Is slightly slanted, but not to the point where it significantly reduces the amount of content it can hold.
