The answer is yes, according to my wife. Although I have reservations, I cannot say no. One inch thick is all that is required to open the slide door. Despite the size of the small grains, the sliding door allows for the filling of the portion and then dropping it into the catching container with no difficulty. In my opinion, anything larger than the grains of rice may bind or jam the hinges that portion out the rice. I would strongly discourage such an approach. If you would rather consume breakfast cereal, then choose a dispenser.
There is no way for the top to snap into place, since it is sitting on top of the dispenser. It is a very flat surface and just as sealed as the dispenser door, despite not being a tight seal. So far there have been no issues with bugs or anything else. We started to think about getting another one. It would be okay for grains with no moisture like rice or chicken that wouldn't get stale, but we realized it wouldn't work for anything else.

In a nutshell, use rice almost every meal so buying one of these I thought would be more useful. Rather than have to scoop out the bag and have it leaned up against our kitchen wall. Ok anyway the first one came junk and I didn't realize until after I filled it with 40 pounds of rice. Amazon was unable to assist, so I contacted the manufacturer, who then said they couldn't assist, so I contacted Amazon again, and finally a replacement arrived, but I first had to transfer 40 pounds of rice from the defective dispenser to the replacement so I could return Talk about going beyond my expectations. I wouldn't say the quality is too good! As if nails were scrawled on a chalkboard, the tray squeaks like crazy! Moreover, you can't pull the curtain out and push it back in easily. It shouldn't be hard to glide on it, but it isn't! I have to take care not to damage the tray with any wrong motion or force since it feels very brittle and is likely to snap with any wrong movement. It took me a long time to get tired of keeping a big bag of rice in my kitchen and bought this rice dispenser. That is one of the best purchases I ever made! I've tried pulling the measured release handle slowly and quickly, and everything in between, and every time it delivered the exact amount I needed for my Zojirushi rice cooker. No spills or messy bags, and the dispenser consistently measures out exactly the amount I need for my rice cooker. Rice in 25 or 50 pound bags is much cheaper than buying smaller bags or boxes at the store, so if you eat a lot of rice, this is a great item to have! This dispenser lets you buy a 50 pound bag of rice and not worry about it again. My two minor complaints about this dispenser are that the lid does not "snap" into place, but sits on top (but is large and heavy enough that it cannot be easily knocked off), and there is no indicator light for the contents. But it would have been nice if the lid had snapped on more firmly.
