That is an excellent query. The original red plates were manufactured in Germany and brought to the United States by German immigrants. Until recently, the red plates were produced by Waechtersbach in Germany. The plates would no longer be produced by the manufacturer. After that, Waechtersbach looked for a manufacturer in the EU and the United States. Outside of Asia, no one was willing or capable of manufacturing them. To keep production going, they decided to go with a high-end Chinese manufacturer. Waechtersbach keeps a close eye on the manufacturing process and quality specifications to ensure that they are met. Sorry, but that's not possible. I've been selling the Red Plate for more than ten years and have never seen it written in any language other than English.
I wouldn't put it in the microwave because red paint is made with gold, and the metal in the paint could cause it to spark.
My license plate reads "Made in California 1979" and it is the original. The box is still sealed.

Even if Amazon appears to endorse a business with "Amazon Prime," only purchase from reputable vendors. Waechersbach's original red plate is one of my favorites. It's a high-quality product. Heavy weight and high quality. Unfortunately, there are fake Asian knockoffs on Amazon, as with everything else. The Glitzy Gift Shop, which is no longer in business, was one of the sellers selling fakes. Because the plate was on Amazon Prime, I made the mistake of buying a red plate as a wedding gift for my nephew. I'm glad I opened it because the box wasn't the red plate box, and the plate wasn't an original either. The "Fun Factory" in Thailand produced it, and it was filthy. Instead of being white, the appliqué was glittery, and the plate was a different red color. There was a clear attempt to make the fake look genuine, but if you compare it to one from Waechteesbach, it's obvious! I wish Amazon had tighter control over its vendors - It's a very sad situation.
What is the best way to write a detailed 32-year review? At our wedding, a dear friend presented us with this plate as a gift. We started using it to mark all significant events (birthdays, promotions, new jobs, etc. ) and she explained how it had been such a huge part of her family's life. br> We even used it to lift each other's spirits on bad days. With the addition of the children and increased use (report cards, sports, and accomplishments), it grew into a truly significant part of our lives, and it is always brought out for any visitor who eats in our home. It's now our go-to gift for newlyweds and baby showers, and it was the first gift we gave each of our children when they moved out on their own. We can only hope that it has brought each recipient the same joy, love, and warm memories that we have over the years. "You Are Special Today" is a nice reminder every now and then.
The red glaze is a little brighter, and the white type is a little whiter, but it's the genuine article. The new plate is on the left, and the old plate is on the right, as seen in the first photo I posted. It does not appear to be made in Germany. I took a picture of the back of the new plate and posted it on my Facebook page. Made in Germany is no longer on the label. This plate was purchased as a wedding present, and I am pleased with it. It was also delivered promptly.
Although it may be difficult to see in the photos I've attached, there are several obvious white globs on top of the lettering that resemble liquid paper, which I assume are there to hide imperfections. A significant 1/4" raised circle glaze imperfection can also be found on the plate's back rim. An Amazon Basics permanent marker was included with the plate. Finally, the plate comes in a plain white plate box rather than the original Red Plate box. No way, I thought, when I compared it to my original red plate. This is being returned, and I am annoyed that I now have to find an authentic red plate for a wedding gift as well as repackage and return this item.
This seller sent me a fake plate! When I first got it, I didn't give it much thought because I wasn't looking for a rip-off - I was just excited to give the plate that meant so much to me, but when my friend opened it and I looked at it, it was so fake and cheap looking that I was embarrassed right away. The included pen was a promotional pen, the note enclosure had smeared ink and was dirty and off center, and the overall designs were poor. The plate's wording is skewed and off-center! I'm so dissatisfied that I can't believe it. I'm going to buy from the real Waechtersbach website and give her the real thing:.
The writing on the first two had obvious flaws in the glaze. The first was done with large globs of glaze in the writing, and the second was done with a large cut or slice through the writing. I'm hoping my photos convey this. I've had and used one for over 30 years, so I know they can be of good quality. I need it for a birthday present on Saturday, and I'm hoping that the third time is the charm. Thank goodness I won't have to pay Amazon to return the defective items. It's obviously a bad shipment, but the storage box was also damaged on the second one, so I believe it's a plate that was returned for defects but then shipped to me without being checked for quality control.
Please note that the version sold here is not made in Germany, as stated, and is not the heavy-weight china version you may recall from your childhood. Waechtersbach in Thailand now makes a much lighter, thinner version of this plate, but it is still a great tradition and the plate serves its purpose- However, paying $40 for a lower-quality plate made in Thailand (despite the fact that it is clearly labeled as being made in Germany) is deceptive.
My original "You Are Special Today" plate was given to me as a wedding present 35 years ago. Since then, it's been used for every birthday and special occasion. My three children (all of whom are now adults) grew up with this plate and still enjoy using it to commemorate special occasions such as birthdays. They plan to use it to commemorate the births of their future children. When our favorite plate developed a crack in the middle, we were all heartbroken! I'm overjoyed that a replacement has been found! I'll remember this plate for future wedding gifts, and I'll pass along fond memories!.
