Questions & Answers
It's just a hot pot holder, as far as I can tell. Chemicals are not used. Designed to be used with a cast-iron skillet.
I've scorched a few of mine, but they didn't catch fire, so they could contain a fire retardant.
It is suitable for women who are between the sizes of small and medium. I use it on the stovetop rather than in the oven because it is cast iron or stainless steel. The silicon ones work better in ovens with temperatures between 400 and 450 degrees Fahrenheit.

On rare occasions, I cook in the oven with a skillet (sear). For instance, bake steaks). So, one time, I took the skillet out of the oven, removed my oven mitts, used my thermometer to check the temperature, and decided it needed to go back in. Yes, I forgot to put my oven mitts back on. Grabbing a hot skillet once is a mistake; grabbing it twice is a disaster. There is a pattern here. So I ordered these bright red safety mitts to remind myself that I'm working with a hot skillet. I know, it should be simple to remember, and I was certain it wouldn't happen again after the first time, but it did only 15 minutes later, so I ordered these. Grabbing a hot skillet left a mark on my hand that is still visible 6 weeks later, and I haven't forgotten about my skillet since buying these mitts. They're not quite as long as I'd like, but they do the job. Please save my hands from my own folly!.
I didn't realize when I bought it that it was much longer than most cast iron pan handles, and that the extra length would pose such a risk—it literally caught on fire, and not just once. br>Perhaps if the fit were a little tighter or the interior of the holder narrowed, but it doesn't fit any of my three cast iron pans, which are 12", 8", and 6". br>They are of reasonable quality and thickness, but the holder wiggles around and does not stay attached to the handle. I could see this happening even if it was a shorter length. Bummer.
The product is well-made, but it's a little bigger than I anticipated. Between where the handle and the potholder meet, there is about an inch of empty space. It's nearly twice as wide as the handle, too.
In the past, we'd used rags, but that was never a reliable solution. I tried two different kinds of silicone covers, but our handles are too bulged out at the end to allow the silicone to slide over them. We put them to the test. They perfectly fit over our handles, providing a secure grip while preventing us from overheating. I only put them on when I'm moving the pans around. The heat has not caused them to melt or deform in any way. This is an excellent item.
These are a little shorter than you'd expect, but that's fine; the strange part was how they felt when you first opened them. My wife washed them before using them because they had a slick coating on them. When they were finished, they had lost half of their color and were now grayish rather than black. Because they're less slick, I'm guessing the coating is linked to the color. My best guess is that there was a flaw in the manufacturing process, and it didn't cure properly or thoroughly. At this point, all we can do is speculate. The bottom line is that they work, and that's all that mattered to me when I was grilling with a metal skillet. It is reasonable in price and completes the task. We'll have a nice pair of light grey mini pan holders after a few more washes.
These are very cute and make holding cast-iron skillet handles more bearable, but I have to pull mine back to only cover the handle halfway so it doesn't start blackening or flaring. They are not heat resistant enough to be fully installed on a 10 inch Lodge cast iron skillet while cooking, but they will work if you pull them halfway off to avoid contact with the higher temperatures. I would still recommend this product and use it as directed.
I'm not sure if it's the black coating that's causing the problem. But, despite my best efforts, I was still burned. They're a complete disaster! I understand that they are inexpensive, but they must function!.
In the event that they become stale. Simply toss it into the washing machine. I would strongly suggest it.
