I'm tired of buying the small carving kits that are available at the store and then they break half way through, etc. So I decided to spend a little more money on something that hopefully will last. Despite buying two different kits, I hope one will lead to a lifelong companion! The price of this kit is, in my opinion, a little high. My tools are quite sturdy (and ironically, they are the same ones that came in the $7 kit I bought) as opposed to the little ones I have used previously. In the end, I paid an extra $8 for 4 LED candles, some pumpkin carving stencils, and some LED candles. With the large handles, you shouldn't have much trouble taking it apart and the large blades don't bend nearly as easily as most pliers you'll find in stores. Personally, I preferred the double-sided saw because it cut the pumpkins well even when they were inch or thicker. There is no fancy bag included with this kit but the included one zips up and stores all the included tools, candles, and stencils without requiring you to force anything into it. One thing that stood out for me was that the poker and the flat blade knife both had guards to keep them safe during use. This was especially nice since we took the kit on a camping trip so it was packed and moved about. It was great to have LED candles! (The LED candles are used on the pumpkins pictured). It remains to be seen if they will do any better next year, but they performed for the hours we needed There is an unfortunate piece of news here The scoop is worthless (I tried scraping the interior of the spoon with the top of the spoon and the handle, but the spoon neck was bent instantly. It was at that point that I tried to grasp the metal spoon part in my hand, but the sharp teeth on the side made it difficult. I think it will work well if you hold the handle and scrape the spoon along the outside edge of the pumpkin, but I can't imagine you will come across many pumpkins with straight walls inside for this to work? There is one other downside to this, which is that if you are a detailed carver (i. e. , if you can do fine details in your design), none of these sizes will be suitable. Whenever we carve, we listen to or watch Halloween themed shows while we're carving - I get four for our three person family (my son carves two). I've owned three of these sets and this is one of the best. It comes with some really great tools, an orange bag to make it easy to find next year, and several LED lights in the box. Besides the pumpkin tools I've saved from old sets, the bag is big enough for some other pumpkin tools I've collected from old sets that are too good to throw away. Initially, let's see how tiny pumpkin saws work. I remember when I was a kid, we grabbed an old steak knife and began to cut things. As I recall, the knives were not sharp so they would frequently get stuck in the pumpkins. The large teeth made it impossible to make any small cuts, so you would end up with an imperfect crescent for your elegant sharky smile. I can't think of any better way to describe these saws. It is quite gratifying to hear the pointy edges of the dozens of tiny sharp edges cutting through the hard outer layer of the pumpkin, and they worked even when we got one of those warty green pumpkins In addition to its wide-spoon design, the large scooping tool with its large holes will make it easy to scrape away the seeds and pumpkin viscera, which are always the most tedious and difficult parts of There are some nice tools for poking holes as well as a metal staff thing thingy that is curved, I guess for poking holes in large pumpkins. As you can see, I think LED's are definitely catching on and they are so much safer than candles, and if you live in a windy place, you won't have to worry about them blowing There are some standard stencils included with this set, I think I wouldn't use them, but they are cool to have if you plan on having It seems that there is always someone who wants their pumpkin to look perfect. A stencil is the perfect way to accomplish that. I've never seen an ice poker before, but I think it will be extremely useful when starting a carving. The serrated knives are nice, but I still have to grab a regular knife to start carving you need something with a sharp point to do this. We are going to have a lot of fun carving pumpkins with this set, and we are extremely satisfied with.
