If you're going to use the water, make sure it's clean. If you're going to use the bath method, you'll need a stainless steel rack. Despite being described as "chrome-free," the one that came with my Ball canner from Fresh Preserving The "plated" canner rusted at the seams and was stained. Non-alcoholic beverages should be avoided at all costs. Stainless steel racks are to be avoided at all costs!.
This product has no flaws. For the price, you get a lot of value and utility.
It does what I need it to do, but it's not very good at it. Because the bend in the handles isn't steep enough, it's easy to knock them off the side of the pot, sending your jars splashing back into the boiling water. Also, because the connection point between the handles and the basket isn't fixed, you must be very careful to load and unload the basket in the correct order, or the load will become unbalanced, causing your jars to splash back into boiling water.
This is a fantastic rack that fits perfectly in my Graniteware canner, which holds 21 quarts. I highly recommend this one because it is sturdy and made of stainless steel, which means it will not rust.
This came in handy when I was stuck in a bind. constructing this summer Very useful in keeping my jars upright and making them easier to remove from the water bath.
The size was a little small at first, but my husband was able to adjust it and it now fits perfectly.
It's well-made, perfectly fits our pot, and won't rust because it's stainless steel.
However, because the sides aren't tall enough, the jars easily fall over or overturn. I wouldn't recommend it unless you're able to do it inside and move straight from the canner to the counter next to you.
