By protecting the airlock from foreign bacteria and using the plug or cap to seal it, the twin bubble airlock enables gases produced during fermentation to escape through the airlock while keeping the wort inside the carboy safe and sealed from outside contamination. It won't matter if you seal the carboy with no holes to allow gas to escape, but if you use a tool that's a little thicker than a needle, you can try to drill some holes on it. In the event that you do not seal the carboy, your wort will basically get infected and taste terrible.
Ensure that the stopper is not going to slip out of the jug by wiping water stains from the mouth of the container before using.

They are very cheaply made, but it pays off in the long run. Compared to hard plastic, it can be more easily broken because it is flexible. The rest of my airlocks are made of hard plastic that cracks when put into the rubber stoppers they came in. Since the air lock caps do not have holes in them and will not fit in their airlock tops, you will have to poke holes in the tops with a wide needle and shave the caps down to fit them. The rubber stopper is not needed since I am going to attach the stoppers to plastic lids on jugs. This may not be the best idea, but if plastic is good enough for juice and drinking water, it should be good enough for home brewing,.
I don't want you to get the wrong impression. I think these work just fine. I was only slightly disappointed in the molding quality of the stem where it goes into the grommet on a few of my glasses. There was no leak in my tests, but there really could have been a better job done on this. I think maybe they can just take a little more pride in the work they do, but the products do work, and they come with all the stuff you need. It appears that one of the bungs has a hair going through the center. I have noticed that this has affected its ability to seal a 1 gallon carboy, but it has not contributed to its failure. The pipes (bottom) didn't fit in the caps I had for my carboys, which is a pity because they are very nice. This was an issue of too much looseness.
