My opinion is that it isn't true. A slit is provided on one side so that the handle can be attached. Because the sleeves could not be fastened to my arm, I had to return mine. In order to protect the chair, I returned it and bought a cover for it. Neither of the sides has a slit in them.
You need to make sure you are installing the cover correctly, and I don't want to appear disrespectful. A pair of loops are attached to the bottom of the back piece. As I did not like the color, I had these slip covers made. I am very pleased with them! The size is just right. I don't like spending a lot of money on the kids game room furniture, since I have so many kids running through our house every day. For me, this makes them look more attractive and make them stronger so the kids have more fun wearing them! I would only caution you about placing your recliners against a wall, since if you don't, the straps and possibly some of the back will be visible. However, for me it doesn't present a problem.
