The purpose of it is purely aesthetic. It does, however, look fantastic. A candle or a clear oil flame has the same color as the flame from the wax.
There's no staining on the inside of glass containers with this product. Fabric might be stained, but it has never happened to me. The blue oil I use in my antique lamps has probably been around for more than The bottom of them holding the oil is clear, so this adds a lot to them.
Similarly, I have found the same to be the case. Since the flame doesn't burn the same color as the oil, this may be a proprietary color.
This multicolor version hasn't yet been purchased by me.
