NO, metal containers must not be microwaved. To be clear, the TSA must swab the outside of the container for chemicals before they can open it. Unfortunately, they are unable to open the container. Based on my experience, they have been extremely mindful of what they are doing and how the person carrying the remains might feel.
The plastic box I used was thrown away, my urn came in a plastic bag as well I put the plastic bag inside. The bag almost didn't fit in, but the ashes were able to be kept in it. If I had ordered an extra large, I would have been able to get one.

The ashes of my husband will be placed in this container. It was less than 150 pounds and just fitted in the large size. A box of this size will barely hold my wife's ashes who is 5' 2", but it fits nicely inside of strange reason, the Army wants to receive all the ashes, and the courteous Arlington inurnment coordinator did open the slotted bottom of the box to attach a sticker (no, he did not weigh or sort )
I bought an extra-large air purifier As the actual Service Member, the Cemetery requires that I be inurned in the same niche as them. Therefore, I ordered a large box from another Amazon provider. This will allow me to visit my Dear Wife of 52 years often, and it will be a great comfort to do so.
Typically, a box looks like this- I am reminded of the teak furniture that I bought in Saigon some 50 years ago due to its construction and wood. There is still a lot of life left in that furniture.
The box arrived in very short order, and the large format was selected for a tall male weighing 185 pounds. Corners are a little bit gapped but the remaining pieces fit just fine. After cremains were placed in the box, we observed that one corner came off and the rear panel gaped when kept together (the sides of the defendant did not). Due to the one-time nature of the use, it did not cause a significant problem. There are no nails or glue on this board. This corner was only nailed, or a little glue was missed. In the end, what you pay for is what you get. I considered this to be a good deal and the carving was quite good. The ones at the funeral home start at $250 for a crappy plain box and go up to around $1,000. In all, all is well.

The opinion I have is completely in line with yours- I purchased it for my children to use with my ashes, and it is elegant, simple, and well constructed, so there is no reason for you to spend a lot of money on an urn or box. An urn such as this is very beautiful. These ashes will be placed in a memorial for my father. I ordered the large size. I only have half of my dad's ashes in it and the large will fit them nicely. The pictures may not portray it properly, but I think it's a quality piece. A screw holds the bottom in place, but the ashes can be easily accessed by removing the screw. It would be nice if I didn't need such a beautiful memorial to a wonderful man, but it is a lovely final resting place.
