Is this more of a decorative piece than a precise working instrument?

I gave it to my father as a retirement present, not for precise navigation. Although it "should" work, I believe it is too small to be useful.

Is this the end of it? junk with a price - Is it labeled as "made in China"?

Your hypothesis is incorrect. It works just as well as the ones I used in the Navy. I thought it was a well-made product after receiving it and inspecting it. a model that works I'm sorry, but I don't know if it's made in China. My grandson needed it for a marine navigation course he was taking, so I bought it for him.

Is the glass used in the lenses? is it. able to be used for real-life navigation?

Yes, the lenses are glass, as far as I can tell. Even though it is about 1/3 the size of other examples I've seen, all of the lenses and mirrors appear to line up correctly, and I believe that someone skilled in the use of a sextant (which I am not) could probably make use of this model. I hope this has been of assistance.

For a Navy soldier, this is a priceless retirement gift

I gave it to a long-time coworker and friend who retired from the Navy after 23 years of service a few years ago, and who recently retired from his job as an airforce contractor. br>br>Review: br>br> The box was incredible, and the expression on his face when he saw it, especially to me, was priceless. It was priceless to see his face light up when he looked at it and said, "It's a Sextant. " It was also priceless when he opened it and commented on how nice it felt and how well put together it was. What I liked best about it was how many additional lenses it had and how realistic it looked. as well as the box br>br>What I didn't like was that the majority of the extra lenses didn't line up with anything, so they served no purpose other than to amuse me.

Sextant of the highest order

This appears to be a substantial piece that would look great in an office setting, with a noticeable weight and presence. My only quibble is that the display box I received had developed some small cracks that began to spread, which was likely exacerbated by the fact that it was sitting in front of my house at - After delivery, it is kept at 18°F until it is moved indoors, where it is kept at 70°F. However, the seller was excellent and responsive, with a quick response just a few hours after sending a message.

It's fantastic, and it works exactly as it should

This is sufficient for my needs. Everything (filters and lenses) seemed to line up the way I expected. My H uttered a few oohs and ahhs in response to the box. During a lesson about navigating the "Age of Discovery" in World History class. Students were ecstatic to use a tool they had studied as we "sailed" around campus to figure out where we were in the world. For that reason, this was delivered. We did place ourselves app. using accuracy, which was well used by a bunch of landlubbing rookies who didn't use all of the realistic adjustments (such as refraction). The latitude is off by 5 degrees. They had been wowed. br>The Positive: It looks great, and if you're going to use it for decoration, it's ideal; it's functional, but you get what you pay for. I wouldn't put too much faith in this for real-world navigation. br>Contrary to popular belief, there are some disadvantages to using this product. When using the sun as the celestial body, a darker filter to shade from the sun might be useful.

Beautiful, right down to the box! The item arrived in good condition. It was truly a wow moment when I unwrapped the packaging, and I knew I had made a fantastic purchase when I opened the box containing the sextant. The brass has been well-weathered and finished. All of the lenses appear to be clear glass, the mirror has a good coating, and all of the pieces move freely and appear to be well attached. A small brass eyeglass that works is also included in the box. AN EXCELLENT PURCHASE!.
