The answer is yes, Mary. etched part of the glass is white, so you would need to place a colored candle inside. It would be very hard for the etching to be seen if it were white. Having said that, the floating candle that comes with it should last 8 or more hours, just to let you know. Please accept our congratulations for your interest. It has been a great loss to lose him. A liver cancer afflicted him and caused him to have cerebral palsy. It was his joy and laughter that made our lives more enjoyable. I like the piece very much. The vase I used at my wedding was originally a memorial table, but I'm using it as a vase now. There is a lot of shadow to be seen below the engraving, so you will need to really focus to read it. If the seller would like it in black, I suggest doing it that way so it can be seen clearly. I think you did a great job, except for that.
I love it. It's been a few years since my mother passed away. My wedding is in a couple of weeks and I wanted a display / memory table at the reception. I was able to use the candle I received with my purchase for the duration of my party.
In this case, the lettering does not appear. To make the water colorful, I colored it. As well as a sunken and a back light, I tried. There were no words or lettering on it, so it was more for a memorial service and too subtle for effect. If you want a floating candle effect without any text, though, it might work.
