No, it cannot be mounted on the wall because it is designed for the ceiling.

Is it possible to mount these on a wooden surface? I'm picturing the shelf's very bottom. What is the length of the screws?

Yes, they can be secured to the shelf's bottom. If your shelf isn't very thick, you may need to buy shorter screws. I hung coats and jackets on a metal rod at the bottom of my closet shelves. For my rod, I used a ceiling fan down rod from Lowes. It was both less expensive and more durable than anything else I found.

The package I received does not resemble the image. This was bought to go over a curtained area as a valance. What I got is far too lovely to keep hidden behind a closed door. When seen in the light, the colors, designs, beadwork, and threads will make you gasp. It can be used not only in the doorway, but also at the top of a small window. All you need is a spring rod. It's possible that you'll need to add three more loops (only the ends have loops), so just grab a needle and do it. a line a few stitches here and there.
