My gums were not irritated in the least by either of them! There isn't even a smidgeon of a chance of that happening. I still have three strip packets and three gel tubes left, and I can already see a significant improvement in the whiteness of my teeth. I also can't say enough about how comfortable the mouth tray is. The tray is very soft and comfortable in my mouth, and it doesn't hurt my gums at all; the only problem is that I can't seem to find out where I can get more gel syringes. I've looked all over the internet for them, but they're nowhere to be found. Because they may not be sold separately, you'll have to use a different brand of gel syringes. I have some Opalescence 20% syringes that I got from my dentist that I will use with this unit when I'm out of the gel they sent with the kit when I'm out I haven't had the opportunity to test the Opalescence with this unit yet, but I am confident that it will perform admirably. I also have some Crest whitening strips that are only available through a dentist. Other Crest professional whitening strips (which you can get on your own but aren't as strong as those obtained from a dentist) that I'd like to try with this unit are also available. The only reason I haven't tried them with this unit is because those strips irritate my gums (due to their strength), so I'm hesitant to use them right now. However, this is something that I intend to do in the future. This teeth whitening kit from Sensology comes HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. It's an excellent unit, and with all of the extras that come with it, you can't go wrong with it, especially for the price! The mouth tray and 16 lights in the unit will be a huge hit with you. My teeth stain from drinking a lot of chai tea, and regular toothpaste doesn't seem to help. WOW! Just wow. I've tried other white strips in the past, but my teeth have never turned this white after a few treatments. I usually can't use white strips every day for a few days due to sensitivity, but I'm fine with this one! It's incredibly simple to work with. The strips stick to your teeth like glue, and the light helps to speed up the process. I like the packaging, but I wish the box was a little more durable.
