The stockings were prescribed because I started getting varicose veins in my knee area and wore them for 3 weeks strictly. The varicose around my knee has not gotten worse, but because they are so tight in the thigh area, I have developed new varicose veins at the very top of my inner leg. I sized up as I was in between sizes and it was recommended to do so by their sizing chart. A strap cannot be pulled too high because it will cause nasty bruises if it rolls down. You should measure well and use the sizing guidelines when selecting a size. Our size was one size larger than what was necessary to get a good fit. It's not the fault of the product. It's just that we measured it poorly. The compression of these helps reduce swelling at the knee from the first wear if you are purchasing them after knee surgery since the compression is consistent throughout so you will feel some compression there as well but not necessarily painful.
