The device will wrap ice around the entire knee, so yes, it works. As it runs a little small, and I use it below the knee around the calf, I have this one. In my case, I have to use a different one to fit around my knee because it's a little bit larger due to multiple surgeries and the things I'm trying to heal. As for this one, it's a little on the small side, so it's probably more suitable for a woman, but a small to average sized man could also use it quite effectively. Gel packs that come with it are not very cold, but the gel does not last For the first time, it does help to freeze them overnight. You can also find some other gel packs here on Amazon that stay cold longer and are a perfect fit for extras. There is a picture of them and they come in two.
I ordered one and it worked perfectly. A few days later, I ordered my second. I think these are great. *BTW It appears that you have to put the ice packs in yourself as it shows different types of ice packs. You can put it all on your knees and it's ready to go.
