I placed my breakfast table about two feet from my face, slightly off center. I normally read the newspaper while eating my breakfast. It's on for about 30 to 45 minutes, and I'm not staring directly at it. It's the second time I've turned on the light. One of the original, large and heavy ones belonged to me. The new one is significantly smaller and lighter than the old one. It has made me very happy. It actually helps me deal with my seasonal affective disorder.
The visible spectrum of light that people see is referred to as full spectrum, while UV light is considered to be outside of the visible spectrum.

To achieve that brightness, you must place the lamp six inches away from your eyes. Verilux does not make this clear in their promotional materials. I'd even go so far as to say that the various photos of this lamp on table tops and countertops are purposefully misleading (I'm not sure how you'd be able to work on your MacBook while using this light six inches from your face, for example). I'd recommend the Circadian Optics Lumos 2 if you want a lamp that's similar in price to the Happy light Lucent but brighter and better designed. This is an amazing light! I'd never used a HappyLight before, and it's completely changed my life! I live in New York City, where it seems like it's always gray, and I've definitely felt the effects in the past. This season, I noticed that my energy levels were never low, and I was able to get out of bed even when it was dark. It keeps me going all day when I use it for about 30 minutes each day while eating an early breakfast! I can't say enough about how wonderful this light is. It's also small enough to be portable, which is extremely useful; it would fit in any room in my apartment. I would strongly suggest it.
I ran into the same issue. The cord is also short, and its location (in the middle of the back) makes positioning difficult. Also ineffective is the stand. The lamp's true power is unknown. I was depressed and unmotivated due to the lack of sunlight during this extremely long winter. It's incredible how bright this small light is, and I adore how portable it is. It's a breeze to pack and bring to work.
The power button/power cord began to malfunction a few days after receiving this product, and they only offer a 30-day limited warranty with a lengthy process to even qualify for a return. After a month and a half, mine had completely stopped working. Only when I was at home did I use it. It was not subjected to much, if any, wear and tear. I strongly advise you to avoid this brand at all costs. If I could, I'd give it a zero-star rating.
