There is a distinctly different smell to it, and it is not overpowering. In the meantime, I am trying it out in something else. Generally, the aroma around the kitchen is just such a strange smell it's barely noticeable, sweet, and slightly minty (hence, it's going to be difficult to describe). This product does not appeal to me or seem like something I'd recommend. Do you know if there are different types of anise that I'm In all, I am not sure for now and the smell does not speak to me, therefore, I would rate it a three out of five. We received the order in a timely manner and all was as expected, with the exception of a few broken pieces in about 80% of the whole star anise. My guess is they've gone into the bag already broken, because I find it hard to imagine so many of them were broken in shipping. As part of putting together some tea gifts, my objective was to make the whole spices look their best. If 20 percent were broken, but 80 percent were whole, I would have been okay with that. However, it seems unusual that 80% of the system is broken.

In addition to broken pieces, here is a star anise that may not meet your needs if pristine pods are what you seek. Although for me, the flavor is wonderful, the price is excellent, and there is NO SOLUTION DIOXIDE in the product! That's why I'm all for it.
