When the oil arrived, it didn't smell particularly fresh. I buy organic sunflower oil for massage and cooking on a daily basis, and it's supposed to be fragrance-free. I kept it for a while in case I was mistaken, so I could massage it. It's kept in the fridge by me. I can tell it's slightly rancid now. Most people don't realize it, but I have a particularly sensitive nose. I'm down to less than half a gallon and need to get rid of it. What a waste of money! All I want is a refund. Perhaps it was a bad batch, but this oil was clearly on its way out when I received it.
In comparison to the sunflower oil we order from Russian/slavic food distributors, which has a strong sunflower seed flavor and is surprisingly not rancid despite being shipped halfway around the world, the bottle we received contained oil that was virtually flavorless and slightly rancid. We used it on salads for a while before storing it in our utility room to grease door hinges and oil machinery.
So I made mayonnaise right away after receiving it, but the pil's flavor overpowered the mayo. I'm not sure if I got a bad batch, but it has a very stale/used oil flavor to it, and I won't be able to use it in mayonnaises or dressings, so I'll use the gallob for frying foods where the taste won't be as noticeable. I will not purchase this product again and will continue my search for a natural, light cooking oil.
I highly recommend this oil for massage use.
The color is excellent, and it arrived much sooner than anticipated.
I can't be certain it's organic because it's not USDA certified, but it's possible they didn't go back enough generations on the seeds to make it organic. But I wanted to write a review because I've heard some negative things about it, and as someone who has bought it three times and is about to buy my fourth, I believe I have more experience with it than most people. On foods with a high smoke temperature, it's mostly odorless and has a mild flavor. Smoking is never a problem for me. I've had nothing but positive experiences with it, and a gallon lasts me about a year, so if it was stale, I'm not sure I'd notice until I finished it. I keep it in a dark, cool corner of the pantry and fill a small glass bottle at a time to keep in the stovetop cupboard.
It absorbs quickly into the skin and does not clog pores. It has a distinct odor that is nutty or plant-like. It's a scent that's easy to get used to because it's based on vanilla.
I've been on the lookout for an organic, cold-pressed alternative. pressed. Sunflower oil is a good oil for massage therapists to create variable slip. Baja is the third brand I've tried, and it's so far my new favorite. If you get too much, it's easily absorbed or wiped off. Use a little more for Swedish and relaxation work, and a little less for deeper tissue techniques. It doesn't leave a stain on the sheets. This oil is fantastic.
