It worked perfectly in my room when I tested it. When I actually took it and put it to the test on Tokyo's streets. It didn't work out. It picked up a lot of background noise and couldn't understand what I was saying. After that, I downloaded an app to my phone, which worked much better.
You basically have a pushbutton and a delay on a portable microphone and speaker. If you don't have access to the internet, you'll have to improvise. You don't have a translator if you don't have Wi-Fi or aren't using your cellphone data. You could just as well have an app on your smartphone to do everything instead of charging another device and looking for it all the time.
This lovely device is very sleek and simple to use, in my opinion. I included a photo of the directions, which were written and illustrated very clearly. I'm not a techie and have an older iPhone, but I was able to use this device because it's small and portable, and it's easy to travel with. Even when there were background noises, it was able to pick up my voice; I wasn't able to check 52 languages, but it was able to translate exactly what I said into written words. When she returns to South Korea, my daughter has already requested to borrow it: It would be a nice family gift that could be shared among family and friends who travel internationally or even within the United States. It's incredibly simple to use because it's wireless. The fun part about this item is that you can listen to and see other languages, as well as double-check your own foreign language skills by making sure you're saying the words/sentences correctly. This translator is a fantastic tool for travel, at home, at work, or for fun!.
In addition, if there is ANY background noise, the device will not respond. It's a cool idea, but it's not so cool in practice. Prepare yourself to read Chinese instructions.
This device appears to be fantastic, but it has turned out to be ineffective. Because of its Swahili capabilities, it was purchased specifically for use in Kenya. It didn't work at all; all it did was make a high-pitched buzz and pick up a distant and indistinct phone conversation. I'm going to return it.
I bought this to use for Japanese relatives who were visiting, and it worked great, making it easier for me to understand what they were saying and vice versa.
For it to work, you'll need a cell phone and access to the internet. You'll need two of them and two cell phones to have a two-way conversation. Having said that, they deliver on their promises.
