It has never worked before. There will be no money back. There will be no substitute. Is there really anything else I can say?.
It didn't go well.
Using the touch screen, you can choose one language on the left and another on the right. Then press and hold the hard button on the left, and the unit will listen for that language on the left, translating it into TEXT and VOICE in the language set on the right when you release the button. It takes about two minutes to translate a 20-word sentence using a half-decent internet connection. It's surprisingly quick at 3 seconds. br>br>So you have a transcript of the conversation as well as the spoken word, which is useful if you're looking for directions or other information. The right-hand button will do the exact opposite, translating your language into the one on the left and speaking it aloud. Overall, this is a very straightforward and user-friendly system. If you're considering purchasing this translator, you'll want to break it down into the two modes of operation. Offline Mode: br>br> br>In offline mode, it can only answer the most basic questions, such as "Where is the nearest bathroom?" and "Where is the nearest restaurant?" Anything more complicated than basic travel-related questions will result in gibberish from the unit. On Line Mode: br>br>On Line Mode: br>br>On Line Mode: br>br> When connected to Wifi or tethered to a phone's data connection, this translator transforms from a five-year-old to a capable translator. I tried it in Spanish, Japanese, and Chinese and used prime ministers speeches and news reports that all had subtitles in English and I would say it matched the text about 209 I tried watching a couple of Spanish-language TV shows, which worked as long as there was no background noise or conversation. I believe it has issues with accents in various languages, but it still managed to produce an understandable and fairly accurate translation in the end. If you intend to use this offline, be aware that it is likely no better than a dozen or so other apps available for your phone. If you want to unleash its true potential, use it online; at that point, it's on par with Google's Text Translation, with the exception that it can do two-way voice translation. br>br>I docked one star because the instructions are abysmal, and the WiFi connection system appears to be picky about routers. I had no trouble using it on my Netgear Orbi router, but it wouldn't connect to my R7000 router!br>br>If you're traveling and have access to a data plan, this translator will save you a lot of time and trouble. I intend to use this in my wife's business, as she frequently receives customers who are unable to communicate in English. I believe that knowing they can speak with her or the staff in greater depth will make them feel better.
The status of this product is now "UNAVAILABLE. " This worries me because it implies that there will be no support for it. br>br>I discovered that this translator does not work in "offline" mode when I tested it. I'm getting an error (-) every time I try to do something. 3) the message I'd hook it up to my internet and download the language. It even stated that the file had been downloaded. Then I disable the wifi and run a test, and it simply returns to the error (-). 3) the message I've tried it in Spanish and Chinese, and the results are the same. It works fine when I connect to my wifi, but it isn't very precise. It occurred to me that it might be my accent, but even when I speak very slowly, it does not catch every word. It has a 50/50 chance of correctly identifying everything. The issue is that some wifi accounts do not like it, so you won't be able to use it anywhere. When I tried it at work, it wouldn't connect to the wifi, rendering it useless. It will be useless if you travel abroad and end up on a network that does not support it. You could almost save money by simply downloading a less expensive app to your smartphone. br>br>This is a product I do not recommend.
br>br>One feature that I really like is the ability to quickly switch between languages. The translation will also be repeated if you tap the screen. br>br>I have no complaints; every language I translated worked flawlessly while connected to the internet. I tried the offline feature once and had some issues, so I just keep it connected to avoid issues. br>br>As for the battery, I haven't had any problems with it; I don't use it every day, so I can go a week or so without having to charge it. . . br>br>Now that I think about it, the only issue I have with it is that I need to remind myself to use it more often!.
In college, my daughter is studying for a bachelor's degree in language studies. She plans to travel to a native-speaking country in the near future to improve her foreign language skills. She's used this device to learn a variety of languages, and she's found it to be both useful and frustrating at times. Offline mode is only partially functional, and the device's performance on various wifi networks is inconsistent. Because of this insecurity, she recommends using it as a learning tool rather than relying on it to 'get you places' when traveling. In terms of a learning tool, she has found it to be useful and 'fun' to use in that regard; however, learning languages is her passion, so the fun aspect may not be guaranteed if this isn't yours.
I have a smartphone, but most translation programs require access to the internet, plus there's the issue of battery life and the fact that a large smartphone must be removed each time it is used. So I bought one to take with me on business trips (we have offices in 40 countries, and I only speak English). This unit is so good that I bought a second one for my kids to use in their studies (I have one learning Dutch, one learning French, and one learning Spanish, for some reason!). ) It was so simple to use and supported so many languages that having one was a no-brainer.
Overall, this is a fantastic item to own and study. Although I haven't had many opportunities to test the battery life, I can say that this is an excellent item to have and own, particularly if you enjoy traveling.
